Smyrna, Georgia Probate Lawyer Resources

Smyrna is in Cobb County, just 10 miles outside of Atlanta and is home to an estimated 50,000 residents. It is one of the metropolitan area’s fastest growing cities due to its accessibility to downtown Atlanta and the success of an innovative revitalization plan. The city was incorporated in 1872, but its history as a town dates from 1832 when European settlers claimed land that was distributed in the Georgia Land Lottery. With land from the lottery, a religious community was established called the Smyrna Camp Ground. The camp was used by groups of all religious denominations and was especially popular with visitors from northern Georgia. Once the Western and Atlantic Railroad project was completed in the 1840’s, Smyrna grew into a prospering community. The Concord Woolen Mills in Cobb County supplied Confederate uniforms to the troops during the Civil War. At that time the Confederate Army was utilizing the Smyrna Camp Ground as an officer training camp. The campground was located next to the railway, which made it an ideal location for the training facility. The railroad facilitated troop and supply movement. But Smyrna suffered greatly during the Civil War and most of the city’s residential and commercial buildings were devastated by fire, including the mill. After the war many of the buildings were rebuilt, including the Concord Woolen Mills. Once rebuilt, the mill continued to support the regional economy for several decades. As in most parts of Georgia, Smyrna’s economy relied mostly on agriculture throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. But in the 1940’s the Bell Aircraft Corporation in Marietta built a plant to build B–29 bombers. The plant provided many jobs to residents of neighboring cities, including Smyrna. In the second half of the 20th century, Smyrna’s government successfully launched a redevelopment plan that included several award–winning projects. The Market Village is one such project and is a mixed–use district at the heart of the city’s social scene. Adjacent to the Market Village is the Village Green. This space contains a community center and the city–owned 28,000 square foot public library. These developments are located on 30 acres and have lured many new residents to Smyrna, which in turn has spurred on construction of new housing developments.
