Sandy Springs, Georgia Probate Lawyer

Sandy Springs is metropolitan Atlanta’s third largest city and is located within Fulton County. But it was not until 2005 that the city gained incorporation. This was mainly due to its impressive growth since 1980. Since that year Sandy Springs’ affluent population has nearly doubled to what is today an estimated 87,000 citizens. The growth of Sandy Springs can be linked to its close proximity to Atlanta, at just 15 miles from the downtown district. Originally the area was named after the “sandy” springs in the region. The springs that the city grew up around are now a protected historical treasure. Sandy Springs as a name was first coined in 1851 when Wilson Spruill donated land to build the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. In the early 1900’s the city grew in size and a school called the Hammond School was constructed to serve the great number of families with children that had moved to the area. Prosperity after World War II brought more people to the city and this population growth was followed by even more growth as Interstate 285 and Georgia 400 were expanded in the 1960’s and 1970’s, connecting Sandy Springs to Atlanta. With the expansion, commuters could easily move between Atlanta and Sandy Springs and have made the city a popular location for local corporations. Headquartered in Sandy Springs are companies such as United Parcel Service, Mirant Corporation, Newell Rubbermaid and Porsche Cars North America. The population growth brought an increased tax base to the area and for this reason incorporation of the city was hotly debated for several decades until finally in 2005, a referendum was held and incorporation was approved. Sandy Springs citizens voted 94% in favor of incorporation.
