Decatur, Georgia Probate Lawyers

Decatur is located between downtown Atlanta and Stone Mountain and is the DeKalb county seat. The city was named after naval hero Stephen Decatur and was established in 1823. The first settlement in the region, originally the city was anchored by a trading post located where the Sandtown and Shallowford Indian trails cross. Presently, the city sits on 4.2 square miles and is inhabited by roughly 18,000 residents. Decatur’s history was decided in the 1830’s when the residents declined the opportunity to have a railroad terminal built in town. The main objections were pollution, noise and unbridled growth that would have come with the project. The Western and Atlantic Railroad proposed to the citizens what would have been the southernmost terminal on the rail line to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Decatur declined the proposal and the rail company founded a new city where they could build the terminal. Originally named “Atlantica–Pacifica” after the railroad’s name, the city name was eventually abbreviated to Atlanta. Since that fateful decision, Decatur has existed in the shadow of Atlanta. By the 1950’s much of Atlanta’s wealthier population had moved outside of the city to neighboring communities like Decatur. Recently, greater population growth has come along with the development of local transportation systems that allow Decatur commuters faster access to downtown Atlanta. Besides its attraction as a bedroom community for a growing Atlanta workforce, Decatur has developed several mixed–use areas that create a small, but chic alternative to Atlanta.

Decatur is close to Atlanta and has three MARTA rail stations, making it an easy commute to the Buckhead or Midtown–Atlanta location of The Libby Law Firm.
